Modern Cabin Architecture
Designing a modern cabin in a rural setting requires understanding of local site conditions and building methods that are often very different from our urban designs. The terrain may be rough, access may be limited, and utilities scarce. In modern cabin design, careful site analysis is a critical first step to determine how to best locate the house on the property and whether it should be a single-story or multi-story plan.
Modern cabin plans create opportunities for low carbon footprint and net-zero living. We focus on locally sourced materials, exceptional levels of energy efficiency, and solar gain that is both passive and from photovoltaic panels. Due to their remote nature, modern cabin design often require backup energy systems such as generators and batteries to survive extended power outages.
Identifying well-qualified contractors can require extra diligence, as builders in remote areas are not always experienced in working with the detailed plans and specifications we provide as modern cabin design architects. We have completed successful collaborations with such builders, typically at costs that are below urban prices.

Pear Point House, a compact 1100 SF waterfront cabin near Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. This modern cabin will eventually become the guest house, accompanying a 3,000 square foot primary modern custom architecture residence. Construction begins in 2023. (rendering)
Valley View House is a 3100 square foot residence located on 12 acres near Ellensburg, Washington, and overlooks the Yakima River and surrounding valley. Construction will be complete in mid-2023. (rendering)
